1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Discussion about a father’s words to his son to work out what it means to be independent
- Know some information about American Vs Vietnamese ways of raising children.
2. Skills:
- Develop reading, speaking skills
- Help sts develop the skill of working in pairs and groups
3. Attitude:
- Serious, positive, proactive, independent to take part in group activities.
- Showing passion & excitement in studying
- Cultivate morality, love people, and love their homeland
4. Competence:
- Self-study ability
- Problem-solving ability
- Presentation capacity and reporting

Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - Discussion about a father’s words to his son to work out what it means to be independent - Know some information about American Vs Vietnamese ways of raising children. 2. Skills: - Develop reading, speaking skills - Help sts develop the skill of working in pairs and groups 3. Attitude: - Serious, positive, proactive, independent to take part in group activities. - Showing passion & excitement in studying - Cultivate morality, love people, and love their homeland 4. Competence: - Self-study ability - Problem-solving ability - Presentation capacity and reporting 5. Description table of cognitive competence levels and orientation for Ss’ progress: CONTENT Knowledge Comprehension Low application (level 1) High application (level 2) Communication - Know more about “ what it means to be independent” - Understand the question and the meaning of some new words/ phrases - Sharing their ideas Culture - Learn some more new words - Understand the main ideas to do the text - Discuss and report the ideas in front of the class - Exchange the information with other students in different groups. II. MATERIAL NEEDED 1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, cassette player, disc. 2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker III. PROCEDURE: 1. Warmup: (7m) Goal: Lead in the lesson Tasks: Chatting Method: Work individually - Give sts some questions to discuss ?) Have you ever listened to your father’s words? If yes, what did you do? ?) Are you independent? Why? Why not? - In turn, sts state about their independence or dependence and explain briefly why or why not? (Sts private answers) - Feedback. - Lead into the lesson. 2. Contents: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities I. COMMUNICATION ACTIVITY 1: Discuss the extract and prepare a short talk expressing your group’s opinion about it. (15 m) Aim: Sts understand more about the meaning of becoming independent Method: Work in groups - Ask sts question: “What it means to be independent?” - Help sts understand this saying - Elicit vocabulary using explanations - Ask sts to work in groups of tables and discuss 3 questions - Call on some representative of some groups to perform in front of the whole class. - Ask others to give comments - Feedback - Listen to the teacher and answer freely. - Read the passage and then listen to the teacher’s guiding. - Work in groups to discuss the 3 questions. - Report the result of discussing. - Give comments - Check and take notes (Sts private answers) II. CULTURE - Ask sts if they think there are any differences between the ways American and Vietnamese parents raise their children. - Ask sts to think about why there are such differences. - Lead into the part culture. ACTIVITY 1: TASK 1 - Reading and answering the questions (12 m) Aims: Sts understand the differences between the ways American and Vietnamese parents raise their children Methods: Work in groups - Tell sts to read the texts and see if the information in it matches with their background knowledge. - Ask sts to read two passages about how American and Vietnamese parents raise their children and answer the questions - Ask sts to read the questions first to find out key words in these questions - Ask sts to work in groups of tables to write their answers on vice-board - Hang out the vice-board and ask sts to give comments. - Feedback - Give self – opinion about the differences between the ways American and Vietnamese parents raise their children. - Listen to the teacher. - Listen to the teacher’s guiding. - Do the task in groups and write the answers on the vice-board. - Look to the vice-board and give comments for other groups’ answers. - Check and take notes. 1. ACTIVITY 3: - TASK 2: DISCUSSING (8 m) Aims: Sts discuss to exchange their opinions about the topic Methods: Work in groups - Ask Ss to make some comparisons between the two countries in terms of raising children. - Tell them to read the texts and see if the information matches with their background knowledge, using while, whereas, different from. - Explain how to use the given words and phrases and give examples before asking sts to make comparisons. - Call on some sts to report their groups’ opinions to the class. - Ask other to give comments. - Feedback - Work in groups to make some comparisons between the two countries in terms of raising children. - Read the text again and discuss - Report the discussing result. - Give comments. - Check and take notes 3. Consolidation and homework a. Consolidation: (2m) - Teacher summaries main points of the lesson - Students listen and add some more points b. Homework: (1m) - Do the task again - Prepare the next lesson at home.
