1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Get to know the topic, some vocabulary related to ASEAN –its aims, member states and activities, the use of gerunds, and state verbs in continuous forms.

- Know about the cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN countries.

2. Skills:

 - Develop Listening, reading skills

3. Attitude:

 - Respect ASEAN countries and their diverse cultures.

 - Serious, positive, proactive, independent to take part in group activities.

 - Showing passion & excitement in studying

 - Cultivate morality, love people, and love their homeland

4. Competence:

- Self-study ability

- Problem-solving ability

- Presentation capacity and reporting

II. MATERIAL NEEDED

1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, cassette player, disc.

2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker

UNIT 5: BEING PART OF ASEAN
PERIOD 40: LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 
- Get to know the topic, some vocabulary related to ASEAN –its aims, member states and activities, the use of gerunds, and state verbs in continuous forms.

II. MATERIAL NEEDED

III. PROCEDURE: 
1. Warmup: (5m)
Goal: Lead Ss into the topic of the lesson
Tasks: Ask and answer
Method: Whole class.
T shows Ss some pictures and asks Ss to answer the questions
1. What does it symbolize? / (what is this symbol?)
2. What does “ASEAN” stand for ?
3. How many members are there in ASEAN?
* Expected answers: 
+It is the symbol of ASEAN
+ “ASEAN” stands for “ Association of Southeast Asian Nations”
+ There are 10 members in ASEAN
T elicits answers from students, encourages them if they know more about ASEAN. Then T adds some more information about ASEAN, for example: Viet Nam became a member of ASEAN in 1995. They are 
* Lead in: In our lesson today, you will know something about ASEAN: its aims, member states and activities.

ACTIVITY 1: Teaching vocabulary (8m)
Aim: Teaching vocabulary
Method: observation skills and produce the new words.
- Give out some vocabulary:
 Charter ['t∫ɑ:t∂] (n) : hiến chương
External Interference [eks't∂:nl] [,int∂'fi∂r∂ns] :

- Read the above words out loud and has students repeat.
- Let Ss read in chorus 2 times and then individually
- Check out the vocabulary.
- Look at the given words and pictures to guests the meaning of the words.
- Write down the words on the notebooks.
- Read the words in chorus and individually.
- Check and take notes
ACTIVITY 2: What is the conversation about? Choose the best answer(5m)
Aims: To help Ss to get main idea of each paragraph.
Methods: Work individually.
- Inform the Ss that the activity is for skimming only (reading quickly for general ideas).
 Set a time limit for the class.
 Have Ss work individually, and then compare their answers with a partner. 
 Ask Ss to read their answers out loud to make sure they have watched them correctly. 
- Listen to the teacher.
- Guests the contents
- Take notes if necessary.
Key: Preparation for a competition on ASEAN and the ASEAN Charter 
ACTIVITY 3:Match the words with its definitions (5m)
Aims: Sts get more words to understand the text.
Methods: Work individually and in pairs.
 - Ask Ss to work individually to match each word with its definition
- Then ask Ss to work in pairs to practise reading the words aloud
 - Encourage Ss to use the word in context in the conversation when choosing the correct definition for each word
Listen to the teacher.

ACTIVITY 4: Read the text again and answer the questions (15m)
Aims: To help Ss understand the conversation through comprehension questions.
Methods: Work in pairs
- Ask Ss to scan (look only for specific facts or details without reading everything) the text to find the answers to the questions 
Have them highlight the key words in the questions first, and then try to answer the same words in the text.
Then, Ss can take turns asking and answering the questions in pairs. 
Check answers in front of the class.
- Do the task in pairs
- Give out the answers.
- Give comments.
- Check and take notes
