 - Cultivate morality, love people, and love their homeland

 - Understand the generation gaps: problems and solutions

UNIT 1: THE GENERATION GAP
PERIOD 2: LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 
- Interact about listening and speaking
- Vocabulary: words and phrases related to the generation gaps and family rules and compound nouns
- Pronunciation: Strong and weak forms of words in connected speech.
- Grammar: Modals: Should, ought to, must, have to

II. MATERIAL NEEDED
1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, cassette player, disc.
2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker
III. PROCEDURE: 
1. Warmup: (5m)
Goal: Lead sts into the topic of the lesson
Tasks: Teacher explain and guide
Method: Whole class.
- Ask sts questions about the picture: 
This is a photo of a big family. Who are in the photo? Is this type of family popular in your community?
Suggested answer: They are a big family with many generations, an extended family which is so popular in Vietnam’s families.
Ask sts the meaning of “the generation gap”.
Suggested answer: A generation gap is diffirence in attitudes or behavior between younger and older age group, which can cause a lack of understanding.
- Tell sts that these differences can be in the choice of music, clothing, values, lifestyles, ways of shopping (directly from shopping centers or online), or communication
Lead in: We are going to study unit 1 “ the Generation Gap” - getting started- To know more about the family and the generation gap .

ACTIVITY 1: 
Teaching vocabulary: (8m)
Aim: Teaching vocabulary
Method: observation skills and produce the new words.
- Give out some vocabulary:
+ extended family (n.p) ( picture) 
+ nuclear family(n.p) ( picture)
+ generation gap (n.p) 
+ childcare /ˈʧajəldˌkeɚ/(n)- the things that are done to take care of children especially when their parents are away or at work
+ table manner (n) /'teibl mænə[r]z/ : phong thái ngồi ăn
+ view point = point of view
+ follow in someone's footsteps
+ impose on (v) /im'pəʊz/ 
+ believe (v) /bi'li:v/ 
→ belief (n) /bi'li:f/
- Read the above words out loud and has students repeat.
- Let sts read in chorus 2 times and then individually
- Check out the vocabulary.
- Look at the given words and pictures to guests the meaning of the words.
- Write down the words on the notebooks.
- Read the words in chorus and individually.
- Check.
ACTIVITY 2:
Listen & Read (5m)
Aims: To help sts concentrate in listening to a conversation between two friends.
Methods: Work individually.
- Tell sts that they are going to listen to a conversation between two friends, Sam and Ann.
- Let sts guests what Sam and Ann are talking about.
- Play the recording. 
- Tell sts not to worry about new language items as they will have a chance to come back to them later on.
- Listen to the teacher.
- Guests the contents
- Listen to the conversation and read along.
- Take notes if necessary.
ACTIVITY 3:
Decide the Statements true (T) or false (F) (5m)
Aims: To help sts understand the conversation through comprehension questions.
Methods: Reading individually.
- Ask sts to read the statements and decide if they are true (T) or false (F) and refer to the conversation to find clues for their answers.
- Call on some sts to give out their answers.
- Ask other to give comments
- Feedback.
- Do the task individually.
- Give out the answers.

Complete the Definitions (5m) 
Aims: To help sts understand the conversation through comprehension questions.
Methods: Reading individually
- Ask them to complete the definitions, using the highlighted compound nouns in the conversation.
- Ask sts to check answers in pairs.
- Feedback
- Do the task individually.
- Give out the answers.
- Give comments.
- Check and take notes

Find the Compound Nouns (5m) 
Aims: To help sts understand the compound nouns.
Methods: Work individually, in groups.
- Ask sts to read the conversation again to find seven other compound nouns.
- Allow sts to use a dictionary to look up the meanings of the compound nouns.
- Tell sts to compare their answers in groups. 
- Then check answers as class.
- Read the conversation again to find seven other compound nouns.
- Find out the meaning of the compound nouns.
- Compare the answers in groups of a table.
- Check and take notes.

Find Verbs (5m) 
Aims: To help sts focus on should, ought to, must and have to..
Methods: Work in pairs.
- Ask sts to read the conversation again to find verbs expressing duty, obligation, and advice.
- Tell sts to compare their answers in pairs
- Then check answers as a class.
- Read the conversation again to find verbs expressing duty, obligation, and advice.

ACTIVITY 7: 
Ask and Answer (5m) 
Aims: To provide initial speaking practice.
Methods: Work in pairs.
- Ask sts to work in pairs, practice asking and answering the questions given using the ideas from the conversation and sts’ own ideas.
- Have some sts tell the class about their partners' type of family and what they like and dislike about it.
- Practice asking and answering the questions
- Present in front of the whole class.
Expected answers: 
1. I’m a part of a nuclear/extended family.
2. I learn a lot of skills from my grandparents.
3. Consolidation and homework:
a. Consolidation: (1m)
- Teacher summaries main points of the lesson
- Students listen and add some more points
