PERIOD 63 UNIT 7: FURTHER EDUCATION
LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 
- Get to know the topic of “Further education”
- Vocabulary: words and phrases related to the topic of “Further education”.
- Grammar: Introduce the present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses.
2. Skills:

III. PROCEDURE: 
1. Warmup: (5m)
Goal: Lead SS into the topic of the lesson
Task: In 1 minute, match the names of the school with correct pictures.
 A – Upper secondary school
 B – Lower secondary school
 C – Kindergarten

- Ask SS question: “What schools will you go to after leaving Upper secondary school?” - > from the answer of the students, lead them to the topic “Further education”. Further education means a level of education that follows Upper secondary school such as university, college, vocational schools.
 + Lead in: In our lesson today, we’re going to explore some information about further education.

ACTIVITY 1: Listen and read. (10m)
-Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a conversation between three friends, Phong, Kevin and Maria.
- Preteach the needed vocabulary to help SS understand the conversation effectively.

 Eg: An ecademic school year in Vietnam lasts 9 months.

 - Read the above words aloud and have students repeat.
- Let Ss read in chorus 2 times and then individually

- Look at the given words in the examples and pictures to guest the meaning of the words.
- Read the words in chorus and individually.

ACTIVITY 2: Work in pairs. Complete each sentence with no more than three words.(8m)
* Aims: This activity consolidates the use of key vocabulary from GETTING STARTED. 
 - Have Ss work individually. Ss may compare their answers with a partner.
- Monitor the activity and offer support, if necessary.
- Check answers as a class.
- Listen to the teacher’s instruction carefully.
- Work individually then compare the result with the partner.

ACTIVITY 3: Work in groups of three. Read the conversation again and answer the questions. (12m)
* Aims: To help Ss understand the conversation through comprehension questions.
- Divide Ss in class into groups of 3.
- Ask Ss to scan (look only for specific facts or details without reading everything) the text to find the answers to the questions.
- Have them highlight the key words in the questions first, and then try to answer the same words in the text.
- Then, Ss can take turns asking and answering the questions in pairs.
- Check answers in front of the class.
- Work in groups. Read the question carefully , underline the key words then find out the answers.
- Check and take notes

1. They can pursue further education
2. They can help students develop analytical skills, critical thinking and knowledge for higher education at a university or college
3. Because they want to take some time before deciding on their career and major
4. Taking a gap year can allow students to do voluntary work or internships, and travel. This practical experience will make their CVs look good
ACTIVITY 4: Work in pairs. Discuss your plans after leaving secondary school. (7m)
* Aims: To help Ss to talk about their plans after leaving secondary school
- Have Ss work in pairs. Ask them to read and discuss the example fi rst. Then give them a few minutes to think about their own plans and share them with their partners.
- Elicit some answers from Ss in front of the class. Have the rest of the class ask further questions and discuss any points.
- Give feedback.
- Do the task in pairs.
- Give out the answers.
Eg: I’d like to work in a business environment, so I will choose business administration as my major. After graduating from secondary school, I will take some Business English courses and I will also work on my presentation skills.

- Revise the use of the present perfect continous. Then distinguish the present perfect with the present perfect continuous

compare the answers.

ACTIVITY 2: PRONUNCIATION
* Intonation on Wh-questions. (10 m)
1. Task 1. 
- Explain the use of rising and falling intonation by modelling the two types of questions.
- Play the recording for Ss to listen and follow in their books.
- Model the intonation (or play the recording again) for Ss to repeat chorally and individually.
- Help them to distinguish between rising and falling intonation by highlighting the rise and fall of the voice.
- Ask Ss to work in pairs, taking turns to say the questions.
2. Task 2
- Play the recording. Ask Ss to repeat each question without hesitating or pausing. Their voice should go down at the end of the wh-questions.
- Have Ss work in pairs, taking turns saying the questions. 
- Invite some Ss to read the questions out loud in front of the class. Encourage other Ss to say if their intonation is appropriate or not.
- Listen to the teacher’s instruction carefully to know how to usr the intonation corectly between Yes/No - Qs and Wh-questions.
* Note: 
+ Speakers use rising intonation at the end of Yes/No questions.
+ Speakers use falling intonation at the end of Wh - questions.
- Work in pairs taking turns to say the questions.
- Listen to the recording and repeat the questions 
- Work in pairs taking turns practise saying the given questions.
Eg: 1. How much does it cót to study in Singapore? (falling intonation)

4. When should I send my application form?

- Read the questions out loud in front of the class and correct mistake if any.
ACTIVITY 3: GRAMMAR
The present perfect and the present perfect
1. Task 1. (5m)
* Aims: Help Ss to know how to use “since, for ” to express the time.
-Ask Ss to read the instructions and the verb forms, and check if they understand the task. Explain and give examples of time expressions. 
E.g. + I have learnt English since 2008.
 + I have learnt English for three years.
- Have Ss read the conversation in GETTING STARTED to find the verb forms. Then remind Ss to pay attention to the time expressions and complete the answers.
- Check answers as a class.
2. Task 2. (12m)
- Ask Ss to read the instructions and explain the task, if necessary.
- Have Ss read the explanations in the Do you know ...? box in pairs. Check if they understand them by asking questions such as How do we form the present perfect continuous tense? When do we use the tense? What is the difference between the present perfect continuous and the present perfect tense? etc. 
- Give further explanations, if necessary.
* The present perfect continuous
a. The usage 
- We use the present perfect continuous with have / has been + -ing form of the verb for actions which started in the past and are still happening, or have only just finished.
Examples:
- I have been searching for information about further education for several days.
- The playground is wet. It has been raining.
 b. The present perfect and present perfect continuous
- The actions can be expressed by either the present perfect or the present perfect continuous with certain verbs: hope, learn, lie, live, look, rain, sleep, sit, snow, stand, stay, study,teach, wait, work.
- The different between the two tenses is that the present perfect focuses on on the result of the action or event. Meanwhile, the present perfect continuous focuses on the action or event which may or may not be finished.
- Have Ss read the examples and pay attention to the continuity of the action in each sentence.
- Ask Ss to work fi rst individually, then with a partner. Check answers as a class.
3. Task 3. (8m)
-Tell Ss that the activity focuses on the distinction between the present perfect and the present perfect continuous.
- Have Ss work in pairs to work out the answers.
- Monitor the activity and off er help, if necessary.
- Check answers by asking individual Ss to take turns reading aloud their answers.
- Make the activity more competitive by giving points to the fi rst pair to give the correct answers. Add extra points to Ss who can explain their choice of tense. The pair that gets the most points is the
winner.
- The whole class pay attention to the T carefully.

 + Do you know how the school year in the UK is organised? 
+ What are the common types of examinations in the UK? 
+ What are some of the best universities in the UK? 
+ How can you find the most appropriate course for you? 
+ What kind of skills do you need?
- Elicit some answers and retell the the best ones. And give feedback.
- Work in pairs discuss and practise speaking.
