I. OBJECTIVE:

1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Know about factors responsible for the increase in life expectancy.

- Enrich the vocabulary related to the topic: healthy lifestyle.

2. Skills:

 - Develop reading skills: the ability to follow the logical structure of a text and reading for specific information

- Improve listening and speaking skills.

3. Attitude:

- Have right attitude toward learning, have responsible attitude toward their schoolwork.

- Be aware of the things that help to live long and healthy.

4. Competence:

- Develop the skills of working in pairs and groups as well as time management ability.

II. MATERIAL NEEDED

1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, references, CDs, CD player.

2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker

UNIT 10: HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND LONGEVITY
PERIOD 81: LESSON 3 : READING
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Know about factors responsible for the increase in life expectancy.
- Enrich the vocabulary related to the topic: healthy lifestyle.
2. Skills: 
 - Develop reading skills: the ability to follow the logical structure of a text and reading for specific information
- Improve listening and speaking skills. 
3. Attitude:
- Have right attitude toward learning, have responsible attitude toward their schoolwork.
- Be aware of the things that help to live long and healthy.
4. Competence:
- Develop the skills of working in pairs and groups as well as time management ability.
II. MATERIAL NEEDED
1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, references, CDs, CD player...
2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker
III. PROCEDURE: 
1. Warm up: (3 m)
Goal:Lead students to the topic of the new lesson.
+ Ask SS questions : Have you ever seen these two kinds of machine?
 What are they used for?
* Answers: 
a. MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner.
b. X-ray machine.
- They aare used to take medical images of patients’ internal body parts. MRI images provide a 3D representation of organs, Which X-rays usually cannot. 
* Lead in: Inform the class of the lesson objectives: developing the ability to follow the logical structure of a text and reading for specific information.
2. Contents:

Activity 1: Vocabulary (5m)
*Aims: Pre-teach vocabulary for students to help them in reading.
- Pre-teach some of the unfamiliar vocabulary items in the text, but not the highlighted ones because Ss will be required to work out their meaning from the context the words are used in.
* Vocabs: 
+ antibiotics (n): Thuốc kháng sinh
+ fatty (a) : béo, mỡ
+ dietary (a): chế độ ăn uống
+ dramatical(ly) (a/adv): đột ngột, mạnh
+ obesity (n): béo phì
+ boost (v): tăng cường, cải thiện
+ nutrition (n): dinh dưỡng
+ nutritious (a): giàu dinh dưỡng
+ prolong (v) : kéo dài
- Pay attention to the T’s instruction carefully. 
- Look at the pictures to guess the meaning.
- Note down vocabs. Learn to pronounce and get their meaning.
Activity 2:
Read an article about the main factors for the increased life expectancy. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose a sentence (a-d) to complete each gap (1-4). (10m)
* Aims: Improve SS’ reading for general idea skills. Help them to know vocabulary related to the topic life expectancy factors.
- Ask Ss to go through the four sentences.
And then find out the main idea of each sentence through key words.
- Ask Ss to read the text quickly to choose the missing that best suits the passage.
- Set a time limit for this activity since skimming is a speed-reading technique with the purpose of getting a general overview of the content
- Have Ss work individually, and then compare their answers in pairs or small groups
- Check Ss’ answer as a class.
- Read the four given sentences to find out their key words and main ideas
a. the last century’s advances => advances in medicine
b. regular exercise, additional life expectancy => regular exercise
c. this increase, three main factors => introduction/ conclusion
d. eating more fruits and vegetables => healthy diet
- Read the text quiclky to choose the missing for each blank.

- Check the answer to complete the text.
Activity 3: Matching the definitions in A with the words or expressions in B. (12m)
* Aims: Help SS to understand some more words and phrases in context.
- Ask sts to look at the activity 3 in hand out and do it.
- Have Ss read through the definitions carefully, looking for the correct words or phrases that match with the definition.
- Ask them to match and then compare their answers in groups. 
- Call on 2 representative sts to write their answers on board.
- Check Ss’ answers as a class.
- Listen to the T’ requirement and do the task as guided.
- Discuss the answers with friends.

Activity 4: Read the text again and decided whether the statement are true (T) or false (F). (13m)
* Aims: Help SS to practice reading for specific information skills to understand the text.
- Ask Ss to look at the activity 4 in handout and do it in groups of a table.
- Ask Ss to read the full text, include the gapped sentences again and find out the answers
- Invite several pairs to summary the discussions and present their decisions to the rest of the class. 
- Listen to SS and give feedback then make sure the corect answers. 
- Work in groups to do the task

3. Consolidation and homework 
a. Consolidation: (1m)
- Retell some main points of the lesson that SS need to focus on.
b. Homework: (1m)
- Re-answer the questions in Activity 4 – page 63 and write down the answers in the notebooks.
- Do activity 5 at home
