1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Know more about the current family trend in the UK and the USA and can compare with another family trend.

- Language: words relating to describing extended and nuclear families

- Talk and express their views about the advantages and disadvantages of living in a nuclear or an extended family.

 - Understand the current family trend in the UK and the USA.

2. Skills:

- To promote Ss to develop their communication skills and cultural understanding

- To help Ss develop the skill of working in pairs and groups

3. Attitude:

 - Serious, positive, proactive, independent to take part in group activities.

 - Showing passion & excitement in studying

 - Cultivate morality, love people, and love their homeland

4. Competence:

- Self-study ability

- Problem-solving ability

- Presentation capacity and reporting

UNIT 1: THE GENERATION GAP
PERIOD 08: LESSON 7: COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 
- Know more about the current family trend in the UK and the USA and can compare with another family trend.
- Language: words relating to describing extended and nuclear families 
- Talk and express their views about the advantages and disadvantages of living in a nuclear or an extended family.
 - Understand the current family trend in the UK and the USA.

II. MATERIAL NEEDED
1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, cassette player, disc.
2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker
III. PROCEDURE: 
1. Warmup: (6m) Read the drawings
Goal: Lead sts into the topic of the lesson
Tasks: Call out the words
Method: Work in groups
-	Divide the class into two teams. Explain the rules of the game to Ss.
-	Show the drawings one by one and ask Ss to speak out the words / phrases that are illustrated by the drawings. The team that has more correct answers will be the winner.
Suggested answer: 
 1. Sibling 2. a nuclear family 3. conflict 4.an extended family 5.householder chores

COMMUNICATION
ACTIVITY 1: Practice asking and answering the questions. (7m)
Aim: Sts practice speaking skills
Method: Work in groups
- Ask sts to work in groups of 4 to practice ask and answer the 2 questions and take note their members’ answers.
- Go around helping if necessary and collect some common mistakes.
- Work in groups to ask and answers.
- Take notes the answers.
- Ask teacher for helping if necessary.
Suggested answer:
1. I live in a nuclear/an extended family 
2. 
- Living in a nuclear family has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand there are only two generations in a nuclear family so there will be less conflicts and generation gaps. On the other hand nuclear families have to face with the problem of childcare and elderly care 
- Living in an extended family brings about both advantages and disadvantages. For advantages, members in extended families often help each other a lot with child care, elderly care and housework. Children can also learn a lot of experiences from the elderly. For disadvantages, extended families often have a lot of conflicts and generation gaps. 
ACTIVITY 2: Report the group’s opinions (8m)
Aims: Sts know the way to present
Methods: Present in front of the whole class
- Call on some representative of some groups to present their group’s opinions with the whole class.
- Ask others to give comments.
- Feedback.

ACTIVITY 3: Read the text and answer the questions (12m)
Aims: Sts get more knowledge about the trend of extended family in the USA and the UK
Methods: Work individually and then in pairs
- Ask Ss to read the text carefully and highlight any words they may not know. Explain their meaning to Ss. 
- Encourage Ss to compare their guesses with the reasons provided in the text.
- Have Ss answer the questions, and compare their answers.
- Call on some sts to give theirs answers.
- Ask other to give comments.
- Feedback
- Read the text and do as appointed.
- Exchange the answers with a partner.
- Give out the answers.
- Give comments.
- Check and take notes.
1. The number of multi-generational households with three or four generations living under the same roof.
2. Unemployment, part-time work and low-paid jobs have become more common. The cost of housing has become higher. The pressures of childcare and elderly care have become heavier.
3. The disadvantages are the lack of space, independence and privacy, and the daily conflicts.
4. They can develop relationships with adults other than their parents.
5. Old people can become more active when interacting with the younger generations.
ACTIVITY 4: Discussing (8m) 
Aims: Sts practice more and exchange their opinions with their partners.
Methods: Work in pairs
- Tell Ss to work in pairs and discuss the questions. Ss are encouraged to say what they know about the issue, and discuss any possible reasons for the current trend.
- Ask some pairs to report the results of their discussion.
- Ask other to give comments.
- Feedback
- Discuss the questions in pairs.

1. The current family trend in VN is the increase in the number of nuclear families
