Warm-up:

Suggested answers: Playing chess, football, volleyball, table tennis, surfing, baseball, swimming, fishing.

Answer key: HOBBIES- an activity that someone does for pleasure when they are not working.

LESSON 1. READING
I. Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand to their hobbies, and to know the way to talk about their hobbies by themselves.
- Know some vocabulary about the hobbies.

- T leads to vocabulary: “We are going to read the passages about hobbies of the writer. First of all, I will help you with some new words.”
+ accomplished (adj) = talented: tài hoa, tài năng
+ guitarist (n): người chơi guitar. (What do you call a person who plays the guitar?)
+ be good at +N/ V_ing: giỏi về cái gì/làm gì
+ accompany (v): đệm đàn, đệm nhạc
+ admire (v): ngưỡng mộ
+ modest (adj): khiêm tốn
+ glass fish tank (n): bể kiếng nuôi cá (picture).
+ avid (adj): say mê
+ collect (v): sưu tập -> collector (n): người sưu tập 
+ discarded (adj): vứt bỏ, bỏ đi (miming)
+ throw sth away (v): ném vật gì đó đi 
+ (to) indulge in: say sưa, đam mê
+ occupied (adj) = busy: bận rộn (synonym)
- T elicits the words through situations or some other techniques of teaching vocabulary
- T models and asks Ss repeat.
*Task 1:
- T says: “Some of those vocabularies we have just learned is task 1. At home, you have to complete this task and learn all new words by heart.”
-Ss listen to T
-Ss repeat and copy the words into the notebooks after the teacher finishes presenting all of the new words.

II. While-reading:
-T asks Ss: “What is your hobby? To know author’s hobby is the same as your hobby or not, let’s move on Task 2”.
- T gives handouts and asks Ss to work in pairs and predict whether these statements are T or F in 2 minutes.
- T asks Ss to give their prediction.
- T ask Ss to read the text and check their prediction.
1. The writer is an accomplished guitarist.

 4. The writer has more foreign stamps than local ones.

- T calls out some Ss to answer the questions
- T checks the answers and asks them to give evidence to the whole class.
* Task 2:
- T says: “You have to read the text again and answer 9 questions here.”
- T calls somes students to read each question and translate into Vietnamese. T listens to them carefully to make sure they understand the questions correctly.
- T instructs students how to do the lesson by saying: “To find out the answers quickly, you should read the question first and then underline the key words, for each question, you locate the passage which contains the information”.
-T gives example for question 1: “So the key words in question 1 is “first hobby”. So which paragraph contains the information realated to the writer’s first hobby? Yes, that’s the first paragraph”.
- T asks Ss to underlie the key words in 2 minutes and checks as the whole class.
