LINKING VERB AND CLEFT SENTENCES

I. OBJECTIVE:

- Practise doing exercises on linking verbs and cleft sentences.

LINKING VERB AND CLEFT SENTENCES
I. OBJECTIVE:
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 
- Get more knowledge about linking verb and cleft sentences.
- Practise doing exercises on linking verbs and cleft sentences.
2. Skills
- Develop SS’s listening and speaking and writing skills:

- Presentation and reporting abilities.
II. MATERIAL NEEDED
1. Teacher: Textbook, lesson plan, cassette player, disc.
2. Students: Students’ books, learning tools, drafting paper and/or extra board, marker
III. PROCEDURE: 
Warm up: (7 m)
Goal: Create warm atmostphere before starting the lesson and lead SS into the topic of the lesson
Task : Look at the picture and give the verbs related to the boy’s action.
+ Call Ss to write down the words and speak out when T asks. 
+ Answers : sing, sound, feel, touch, see, look, taste, smell, hear, listen to...
+ Lead in the new lesson: Some verbs express the action but some are used to connect with a noun or an adjective. They are linking verbs.
2. Content:

1. Linking verbs. (10 m)
- Ask SS to retell what a linking verb is.
- Linking verbs do not express action. Instead, they connect the subject of the verb with an adjective or noun that describes or identifi es the subject. We use an adjective or a noun after a linkingverb.
Examples:
– She feft very depressed after her boyfriend left her.
– The dessert tastes delicious.
– She said she would become a famous singer someday.

- Give SS 5 minutes to produce Sts then call them to speak.
- Comment and correct mistakes if any.
2.Choose the verbs in the box to complete thesentences. Make changes to the verb forms,if necessary. (8 m)
-First, have Ss choose a suitable verb for each sentence from the word box, and then ask them to use the correct form of the verb to complete the
sentence.

- Go around and give help.
- Call SS to read the Sts and correct mistake if any.
3. Cleft sentences.(7 m)
- Explain to Ss that cleft structures are used to emphasise a particular part of a sentence. It is ... is used when the main verb is in the present tense, and It was ... is used when the main verb is in the past tense.
- Ask Ss to put the underlined part (= the focus) in each sentence after It is / was ...
* It is / was + (focus) + that ...
Examples:
+ John found a gold coin in his garden. 
-> It was John that / who found a gold coin in his garden. (focus on John)
-> It was a gold coin that John found in his garden. (focus on a gold coin)
-> It was in his garden that John found a gold coin. (focus on his garden)
4. Rewrite each sentence to emphasise the underlined part. (10 m)
- Assign SS work and guide them to do the first one sentence as model.
1. Her news made me sad.
-> It was her news that made me sad.
2. You are to blame for the damage.
3. We really enjoy fishing.
4. You should really speak to your parents when you have problems.
5. I like his honesty the most.
6. Laura is in a relationship with Tonny.
- Go over the answers. Make sure all the SS cando them corectly.
- Reply T’s question 
- Stamp on mind the definition of linking verbs.
- Write down the linking verbs mentioned and practise using them.
- Work in individual making Sts and then practise speaking.
Eg:
+ It’s becoming more and more dificult to find job in the city.
+ My grandma stays young at her age.
+ This Pizza tastes delicious.
- Listen to the T and corect mistakes if any. 
- Work in individual to do the exercise as being guided.
* Answers :

- Practise reading the sentences to improve the pronunciation.
- Listen to the T carefully and remember the use of cleft sentence.
- Stamp on mind the structure: 
- Work in pair to do the exercises.
- One reads the given sentence, one read the cleft sentence after rewriting.
- Check the answers with the T.
3. Consolidation and homework. 
a. Consolidation: (2 m)
* Ask SS to retell what they have learnt during the lesson.
+ Teacher summaries main points of the lesson.
b. Homework: (1m)
- Do the task again	
- Prepare “Unit 3: Listening” at home.
